We receive questions and complaints from customers everywhere regarding their inability to hear voice directions from their GPS. A surprising number of commercial drivers specifically request to install a headphone jack in their navigation units. There are several reasons why people may need this service. Frankly, some of us are hard hearing. If you are driving in traffic or severe weather, that can easily affect your ability to hear directions clearly. In fact, many new models do not come with the best sound quality to start with. To help you navigate safely and comfortably, and if your GPS does not come with a headphone jack, we believe you can benefit from this service- especially if you are an older person and your hearing is not as good as it once was.
Simply put: we can install a 3.5mm headphone jack in your GPS so that you can use headphones ( or earbuds etc) to listen to voice directions very clearly and from both channels. This is exactly the same, very common jack you see in smart phones, laptops etc. Outside noise or the people with you can no longer distract you and adversely affect your safe driving.
Most of the time we are able to find a small spot inside the GPS to fit the audio jack and all you will see on the outside is a small hole to plug your headphones. We find this to be the best way to install the jack. Doing so will minimize physical damage and limit dust from getting inside the jack. If there is not enough room inside the GPS and you must have the jack, you may want to consider mounting it on the outside cover somewhere. In this case, we will contact you first and provide you with a photo of how the jack would look like once installed. We will proceed only after you approve the project. Installing a headphone jack will not affect the performance of the GPS in any way. The only good difference is that you will be able to hear directions very clearly and with much ease.
Outside Headphone Jack Installation:
Many newer units are so thin that installing the jack inside the unit is virtually impossible. Many customers opt to have us install the jack outside the unit. Even though sound quality and performance are the same, this type of installation is not without risks - which is why we can not provide the same warranty that we offer for inside installation.
A jack that is installed outside is much more susceptible to physical damage. Dust and water etc can get into it much easier which will affect sound quality or even make it non functional. It is your responsibility as a user to exercise extra caution and care while using the jack. If you drop the GPS and the jack gets damaged, it will not be covered under warranty.
Some units use a cradle that attaches to the back of the GPS for power and charging. This cradle normally will have a speaker that will mute the internal speaker once attached. Installing a jack on these units can be problematic as it is very hard to go around the mute circuit without proper service manuals.
